Build A Greenhouse

Build A Small Greenhouse Yourself

For the gardener who would like to pursue the hobby year round, a backyard greenhouse could be a great source of enjoyment. Even if the idea is to only get a jump on spring planting a backyard greenhouse would be well worth the effort. The following points may be helpful planning a greenhouse project.

Decide what kind of structure will meet your needs: portable or permanent. A primary determiner of the type structure you need is your climate. The more severe the weather conditions the sturdier the greenhouse needs to be. Next, think about if you need a foundation and if so, what will it be made of. A portable greenhouse probably won’t require a foundation, but a permanent structure most likely will. Whichever structure style you choose should be easy to construct and use materials that are easily available.

A wide variety of materials can be used for greenhouse construction. Which ones you use will depend on whether you want to have materials that are relatively inexpensive or if the style and appearance of the greenhouse is more important to you than the expense.

If you decide to use wood, select from redwood, cypress or cedar. If none of these are available the wood you use, unless pressure treated, would need to be painted to prevent possible contamination to the soil, contact damage to plants and for durability.

There is no limit to the types of plants that will grow in a greenhouse-all will. The conditions just have to be the same as those in the native environment. These conditions can be made through the use of heating and lighting systems. A back-up power system will be necessary if these systems are used.

Location of a greenhouse is very important. It needs to have utilities available, good drainage and good sun exposure.

The greenhouse doesn’t have to be large in order for you to enjoy it. Be creative in ways to maximize the space.

Build Your Own Greenhouse

Build a Portable Backyard Greenhouse
A portable greenhouse might be the best when you are building your first greenhouse. A portable greenhouse can be assembled and erected in a short period of time. It is a no-fuss structure that meets the fundamental requirements of a greenhouse – that of providing warmth, appropriate moisture, protection and controlled environment for your plants.

There are four things to consider when building a portable greenhouse:

  1. Frame- You will be assembling and packing away your greenhouse at least once a year so the frame needs to be made from a lightweight but at the same time strong material. You want to be able to easily fit pieces together by yourself. Common materials to use include PVC pipe, wood that has been treated with preservatives that are friendly to the environment, and some metal bars-10mm rebars work well. The hoop house is the easiest design for a portable greenhouse.
  2. Covering material- The glazing that is used in a portable greenhouse is inclined to experience wear and tear due to the repeated assembling and dismantling of the structure. Common standard clear plastic film available at hardware stores will work, but a better choice is sturdy UV stabilized poly film or treated plastic films. These materials prevent condensed moisture from dripping on the plants and also allow for effective transmission of sunlight.
  3. Ease of assembly- You have the choice of erecting a portable greenhouse from a kit that has everything you need to complete the structure or making your own structure with your selection of plans and materials. The kits can be set up in a couple of hours; building it from scratch of course would require more time and work. Whichever option you choose, be sure it has a set of pieces that can be assembled and dismantled with little confusion and ado. Be sure to store all fasteners, clamps, etc, securely.
  4. Storage- Your portable greenhouse structure should be compact enough to be easily stored. The preferred way would be for all the materials to be placed in a single casing that can be stored in a small place. The used covering material would make a waterproof wrapping to keep the other material dry.

You Can Build A Green House Yourself

You can grow any plant in a greenhouse, if the environment is as near as possible to its native one. This may require installing heating and lighting systems. Using systems that require power will necessitate having a back-up system in case of a power failure.

The greenhouse should be placed suitable for easy access to utilities, good sun exposure, ventilation and drainage.

If you want to use a cold frame greenhouse there are a number of natural and inexpensive ways to conserve heat in it.

The greenhouse doesn’t have to be large in order for you to enjoy it. Be creative in ways to maximize the space. Before embarking on the project the following points may be helpful:

Decide if your greenhouse will be a portable or permanent structure. Think about your climate and what you want to do in the greenhouse.  If snow and or strong winds are common in your area be sure your design will hold up in these conditions. Choose a simple design that will use materials found in hardware stores.

Think about whether or not your greenhouse will have a foundation and what sort of material you would want for it. Most permanent ones will be affixed to a foundation.

With regards to materials, decide if you want to use inexpensive materials that are easy to work with or if the look and style of your greenhouse is more important than the cost.

If you decide to use wood, select from redwood, cypress or cedar. If none of these are available the wood you use, unless pressure treated, would need to be painted to prevent possible contamination to the soil, contact damage to plants and for durability.
