Build Your Own Greenhouse

Build a Portable Backyard Greenhouse
A portable greenhouse might be the best when you are building your first greenhouse. A portable greenhouse can be assembled and erected in a short period of time. It is a no-fuss structure that meets the fundamental requirements of a greenhouse – that of providing warmth, appropriate moisture, protection and controlled environment for your plants.

There are four things to consider when building a portable greenhouse:

  1. Frame- You will be assembling and packing away your greenhouse at least once a year so the frame needs to be made from a lightweight but at the same time strong material. You want to be able to easily fit pieces together by yourself. Common materials to use include PVC pipe, wood that has been treated with preservatives that are friendly to the environment, and some metal bars-10mm rebars work well. The hoop house is the easiest design for a portable greenhouse.
  2. Covering material- The glazing that is used in a portable greenhouse is inclined to experience wear and tear due to the repeated assembling and dismantling of the structure. Common standard clear plastic film available at hardware stores will work, but a better choice is sturdy UV stabilized poly film or treated plastic films. These materials prevent condensed moisture from dripping on the plants and also allow for effective transmission of sunlight.
  3. Ease of assembly- You have the choice of erecting a portable greenhouse from a kit that has everything you need to complete the structure or making your own structure with your selection of plans and materials. The kits can be set up in a couple of hours; building it from scratch of course would require more time and work. Whichever option you choose, be sure it has a set of pieces that can be assembled and dismantled with little confusion and ado. Be sure to store all fasteners, clamps, etc, securely.
  4. Storage- Your portable greenhouse structure should be compact enough to be easily stored. The preferred way would be for all the materials to be placed in a single casing that can be stored in a small place. The used covering material would make a waterproof wrapping to keep the other material dry.
